Darcey Bell has received acclaim for this domestic thriller, A Simple Favor. Dubbed a 'relentlessly suspenseful debut', we're told that it 'introduces a virtuoso voice in contemporary fiction'. I find I can't quite go that far, though I did enjoy the book.

Sophisticated Emily asks her best friend, stay-at-home mommy blogger Stephanie, to pick up their two sons after school. And that is the last that is seen of Emily, who is feared dead. Stephanie more or less moves into Emily's life. I can't in good conscience reveal any more of the plot. Don't want to spoil any of the suspenseful parts. Yes, it is suspenseful, but ultimately sort of falls flat in that category.

For a first novel, this is very well written. I do look forward to Bell's second novel. Read A Simple Favor yourself and see if you agree with me.
