When the Germans invaded, and shot her grocer father as an example to others in their town of Damme, Manon Wouters left her country, nursed, and fell in love with a wounded soldier. She eventually arrived in England, where she was recruited and trained as a spy by MI6. They fly her back to Belgium, hoping that she can acquire information on zeppelins and bombers at German airfields as well as on the Zeebrugge submarine base where her brother Florien works. But when she arrives home, she finds that her brother now idolizes the Germans who killed their father - what happened to him? Manon gets a job at the Bruges hospital and establishes local contacts, one of them (Amelie) a fellow nurse at the hospital. She gleans information from patients and passes it on, but then is asked to do more. She cycles to photograph an airfield, which proves dangerous indeed. Fortunately an old local farmer helps her on this and a follow-up mission, when she aids a British pilot after his plane crashes. Her final task, to infiltrate the submarine base, is the riskiest yet, but it does bring her much closer to Florien - and, as this story ends, Manon's work is not over. It's an engaging read, and don't miss the Author's Note at the back that talks about the very real young women who risked (and sometimes lost) their lives fighting back.
