I opened Shadows on a Morning in Maine, eighth in the Antique Print mysteries by Lea Wait with a wistful thought that I would like to be a bystander on that morning on the Maine coast. Such a lovely spot.

Maggie Summers reenters our lives as she tries to decide whether or not to adopt an eight year-old girl who proves to be a handful. She is in the process of restoring her old building to house her antique print shop as well as provide an apartment for herself on the third floor. She also wrestles with the problem her lover Will Brewer presents. He really doesn't want to adopt. They have very differing reasons for wanting a child in their lives.

The shooting of several harbor seals chases all else from Maggie's mind. This is a federal crime. Then the murder of a local fisherman is a shock to the whole community.

As usual, Maggie involves herself in the crimes much against Will's wishes. The reader can't help but like Maggie and wish the best for her and Will. But is this the last straw? Will the love of Maggie's life break off their relationship? Or will she capitulate and give up her dream? They both have good reasons for their decisions. It's good reading, especially on the beach as the sound of waves punctuate the story. Enjoy.
