First published in 1930 under the pen name of Miles Burton, The Secret of High Eldersham was written by Cecil Street, author of at least 140 mystery novels under the names of Miles Burton and John Rhode. This was during the era considered the Golden Age of Crime Writing.

Samuel Whitehead, landlord of the Rose and Crown in the East Anglian village of High Eldersham is found stabbed to death in his pub. When the answer to his death is not readily apparent, Scotland Yard is called in. The villagers are not completely thrilled at this turn of events.

Detective-Inspector Young is sent to assist in the murder investigation. He, in turn, implores his friend Desmond Merrion to travel to East Eldersham to assist him. They are both baffled as to why the man was killed, but are convinced that the village is hiding something. What they are hiding is the question. And will discovering what the villagers won't discuss provide the answer?

Action picks up and Merrion goes through some frightening experiences. But in so doing has he found the love of his single life?
