The title of Janet Hill's picture book, Miss Moon: Wise Words from a Dog Governess, made me wonder, so I opened it up. It tells the tale of doggie governess Wilhelmina Moon, who sets off to look after sixty-seven (!) canines on an island off the French coast. With her are her bulldog Petunia and monkey Mitford.

This charming volume includes twenty life lessons that Miss Moon imparts to her furry charges. First is 'Friends can come in many shapes and sizes.' Lesson Twenty urges, 'Celebrate your accomplishments with family and friends.' What makes them special are the lovely, old-fashioned illustrations - think Sound of Music peopled with delightful mutts in all shapes and sizes.

My favorite advice has to be 'A good book will chase away the dark', though 'Make-believe is food for the soul' comes a close second. Enjoy exploring all these sage ideas with a youngster in your life.
