In mid 1941 during World War II, children were often sent to the rural countryside to avoid the German bombs falling on London. Retired American professor Edwin Carpenter arrives in the village of Noddweir to pursue his study of standing stones. He discovers bloody clothing in the forest. He had heard that some of the evacuated children had gone missing. This is not a good sign.

The village constable is in France fighting the Germans, so Carpenter's daughter Grace takes over the job of finding these runaway kids. Some of the villagers feel German infiltrators are responsible for the missing children. Other villagers, who have taken in some of the evacuees, feel that the young ones have set off to go back home to their own families. Superstitious villagers are sure that the standing stones have supernatural powers and have whisked the young ones away.

Carpenter tries to help Grace find these kids. In so doing he is up against the resentment of the English with America for, at that time in the year, not joining their ally in this Great War. A tough row to hoe.
