Elizabeth is a dedicated arson investigator. Her career necessitates being called out at any time of the day or night to also fight a fire. The demands of her profession threaten her marriage and now the fire that is slowly making its way across the Rocky Mountains might just burn her home to the ground.

When she discovers that the fire was not accidental, she throws her heart and soul into fighting it. If not her marriage, at least she might be able to save something.

Angus, a friend's son, is accused of being the firebug. Elizabeth cannot believe this. A small group of teenagers had been harassing one of the residents on the mountain. Clues point to a blaze set in a fire pit behind that resident's home that was left to burn itself out. Didn't take much for it to spread. A piece of burning paper caught by the wind could have started a major fire.

The weather isn't co-operating, with high winds causing the fire to spread even more quickly. The police aren't co-operating either. They are sure Angus started the fire and refused to listen to any other possibility.

Smoke deals with human emotions and the resilience of the human spirit. The amount of courage it must take to fight a fire is beyond comprehending. I can't imagine it. Smoke is full of the horror of the fight as well as the satisfaction garnered when the fight is won.
