Murder at Brightwell
as the second in Ashley Weaver's charming series starring young English aristocrats Amory Ames and her husband Milo in 1932 England. Amory loves Milo deeply but is often offended by his playboy ways, resulting in a rocky relationship.
n the first book, Amory's childhood best friend and once fiancÚ, Gil Trent, asks her to join a seaside party at the Brightwell Hotel and give her opinion of his sister's unsavory fiancÚ, Rupert Howe. After she gets there, Howe is murdered and soon Gil is arrested. So Amory does what she can to save him, resulting in clashes with canny CID Detective Inspector Jones, and great personal danger. She even suspects Milo might have done it after he arrives on the scene.
Death Wears a Mask
opens, Milo and Amory have reconciled and are back at their London flat. But their idyll is interrupted by an old friend of Amory's mother asking for her help to find out who's stealing her jewelry. Amory reluctantly agrees, but then the lady's nephew is murdered at a masked ball. Who leads the investigation? Inspector Jones, who is now with Scotland Yard. And he even asks for Amory's help this time.
he Ames' roller coaster relationship has its ups and downs this time too, as a rake seems enamored of Amory, while an affectionate actress is in the gossip columns with Milo. But when Amory once more gets herself in deep water, Milo shows by his actions how much he cares. It's an engaging series, perfect if you enjoy light Anglophile historical mysteries.
