Kelley Armstrong is well known for her very popular Women of the Otherworld adult fantasy series, as well as several excellent YA fantasy/horror trilogies - Darkest Powers, Darkness Rising and Age of Legends. Now she brings fans something different yet again in The Masked Truth, which blends mystery, horror and mental illness.

Teen Riley Vasquez, daughter of a cop killed in the line of duty, is traumatized when the pleasant couple for whom she is babysitting is brutally slaughtered downstairs, while she huddles under a bed upstairs with their small daughter. Despite being hailed as a heroine for protecting the child she feels incredible guilt for doing so little. To please her mother, Riley agrees to attend a weekend therapy camp with five other teens, all struggling with mental challenges of their own.

The camp takes place in 'a huge windowless building', a renovated maze-like warehouse, which soon turns into a prison and killing ground. You have to feel for Riley who just jumped from the frying pan into a raging inferno! After armed men show up, apparently to hold the teens for ransom, Riley and Max manage to escape into the recesses of the building together, hunted by killers. What is really going on? Can they trust each other? Can they trust themselves?

As always, Kelley Armstrong gives readers a gripping, grueling read, with shocking revelations around every corner, and lively banter throughout. And it's definitely not over, even after they escape the building. But though they both have serious mental issues, neither Riley nor Max is ready to give up. Highly recommended!
