In previous episodes they killed almost everyone close to him - his family, his neighbors and the girl he loved. Now he works for a secret FBI agency, helping them to track down and take out demons. His friend, Brooke Watson, was taken over by the demon Nobody and has its millennia of memories. Though the demon was killed, its presence damaged and confused her. Now Brooke is held in a mental ward and the team consults her regularly to try to find out more about the monsters they hunt. They are in Fort Bruce, gathering information on two Withered (demons) in the city. Soon they learn that there are more and the hunters quickly become the hunted in a series of violent encounters that leave few standing. Not only that, but one of the monsters, ten thousand year old Rack, starts communicating with John - why? Dan Wells has built a complex, demon-ridden world and gives us an exciting read in The Devil's Only Friend. But don't do as I did and read this one first - it would be much better to start at the beginning of the series.
