Sara Warshawski, P.I., is working for her cousin Boom Boom Warshawski even though he is dead! Sara has been told that Boom Boom's death was an accident. That he slipped and fell off a dock into the harbor and was pulled into a loading apparatus that was filling a ship with barley.

Sara, with the suspicious mind of a private investigator, doesn't believe what the police and ship workers are telling her. She knows Boom Boom, a professional ice hockey player, would not ever have gotten that close to the water. They were very close when children and had remained so as they matured. She knew him as well as anyone ever could.

Something was wrong and she determined to discover just what truly happened. As usual, Sara puts her heart and soul into proving that Boom Boom didn't slip and fall or, even more ludicrous, jump to his death! And, as usual, she ends up putting her own life on the line.

Deadlock might seem a little outdated in today's world of high technology, but I enjoyed it just as much as I enjoy books written today. Author Paretsky quickly gets your attention and pulls you into the story. Sara gets in some pretty frightening life or death situations and I find myself unable to put the book down until I know she is safe.

Paretsky's dry humor runs through the whole story which I particularly like. Another plus for Sara Paretsky.
