Hopefully you have already read the previous four of the Red River series so that you will have already been acquainted with the wonderful characters as well as the background scenery that will bring the tiny town of Center Springs back to mind.

It's the tail end of 1967. The Parker family is trying to keep up with the world as it rushes forward, but finds it a difficult task. Top is now fourteen and finding it difficult to fit in with his peers. His near twin cousin Pepper is desperate to show the town and its inhabitants her heels. She convinces a friend, Cale, to run away with her to join the flower children in San Francisco. Their journey is not what they envisioned.

Back home two strangers disappear and it is feared they have been killed. Various other problems grate on Constable Ned Parker's mind – an unsolved hit-and-run, possible flooding because of many days of pelting rains, and pains in his stomach from an old bullet wound.

Ned heads a group setting out to tail Pepper and Cale. We also join these two while they have adventures of their own. Maybe being on your own isn't what it's cracked up to be. But the very best part of a very good book is the dénouement. Don't go skipping ahead! You must work up to the fast moving ending that will keep you breathless. Extremely exciting. A great read. Don't miss it.
