He was a sensation while he published but interest was lost after his death in 1972. Naval officer Owen Bradwell returns to London in the 1930s from his posting abroad with a glum picture of his future. After he suddenly became color blind, he felt sure his naval career was over. At the same time, someone accomplishes the impossible and escapes from Dartmoor prison. He is now wandering the moors, scantily dressed for the weather, hungry, and fearful of every sound he hears. Bradwell's skills and experience far outweighing his color-blindness, he is assigned to watch an individual believed to be a German spy (Hitler was already making trouble in Europe and England was bracing for the war that was sure to come). Bradwell meets Sally, a young, pretty, interior decorator. She takes him in after he is hit on the head and suffers amnesia. But, wait. Much more is to come. Along with Sally and Bradwell, we as readers live through not only the eye trouble, but amnesia, blackmail, and the antics of the escaped convict. We are also reminded of the stiff British upper lip and marvel as the country's citizens became a cohesive force to face what is before them. This is a good book and worth a read.
