Since everyone loves to root for the underdog, this entertaining collection of short, three and four page biographies should attract a lot of readers. The folks featured here, in one way or another, have tried to change their countries and alter the course of history.

The fifty iconoclastic men and women range from Hannibal Barca, Judah Maccabee, and Owain Glyndwr to Giuseppe Garibaldi, Geronimo, Mao Zedong and Martin Luther King, Jr..

Because this isn't just an exclusive male club either, you'll also find sections devoted to Cleopatra, Boudica, and Joan of Arc, Liliuokalani, Kate Sheppard, and Emma Goldman.

Each biographical entry includes a mix of history, biography, and analysis and is supplemented with photos, sidebars, and an incredible amount of trivia as well.

Explaining why he selected these individuals, Fleischer writes, 'Some are obviously 'good guys'. Others are pretty villainous, but most fit somewhere in between. For a lot of them, it really depends on which side is telling the story – as the old cliché goes, one person's freedom fighter is another's terrorist. Some of them emerged from their revolutions as big winners, others died in the service of a winning cause, and still others lost disastrously.'

This book is designed for readers 14 years of age and older but it will appeal to adults as well. It offers an excellent starting point to learn more about some famous historical figures. The book would be an excellent resource for home schooling households and school/classroom libraries.
