Dr. Mike Scanlon answers his country's call by serving as an army doctor in Afghanistan. He is a husband and the father of a newborn baby girl. He is sure his wife and baby will be safe in their home. Now if he can just keep himself alive.

However, his wife dies in a freak accident. Mike arrives home on compassionate leave to make arrangements for Chloe's funeral and to arrange for care for his baby. Fortunately, Chloe's sister and her husband volunteer to care for the baby until his tour of duty ends.

Not all is always what it seems however. After serving a second tour of duty, Mike comes home to find that his partnership in a medical practice is in jeopardy and the custody of his baby girl is in question.

As usual, Lisa Scottoline engages our emotions quickly. It's very easy to become irate at the fix in which Mike finds himself. The most important thing to him is his baby girl. Will he lose her? Can he stand losing her? Those whom he believed to be friends and colleagues have more or less turned their backs on him. And his wife's sister and husband have misrepresented their intentions.

We can easily understand his mood as he deals with what he believes to be downright rotten treatment. I wanted to rail at him to wake up and recognize what was happening. Scottoline is at her best as she relates Mike's story and Don't Go is another winner for her.
