The problem with many beginning readers is that they do not have much of a storyline; hence, the youngster loses interest or isn't interested in reading the book at all. Thank goodness that isn't the case with this book. Part of the Ready-to-Read series, this Level Three book is actually quite interesting.

It's divided into four chapters. The author discusses the history of chocolate from its use in Central America over 3,500 years. Cacao beans were used as money as well as for a beverage. From the Olmecs to the Mayans and the Aztecs, the chocolate beverage spread throughout the New World.

Then Spanish explorers introduced chocolate to Europe in the 16th century. Krensky follows the story right to the appearance of Cadbury in England and Milton Hershey in the U.S., and the development of their chocolate products.

Filled with interesting facts and trivia, this is a little book that will hold the child's attention and also help him/her master the skill of reading. Note: This is a book that should be used with a more advanced reader, not a beginner. There's also a little quiz on the final page to see how well the youngster remembers the book's content.
