If you have fond memories of reading Louise May Alcott's Little Women or you have a youngster who has read it, this holiday picture book will strike a positive chord. The women of the March family will be spending Christmas without the head of the family.

Father has gone off to serve as a chaplain in the Civil War and he is recovering from a grave illness in a Union hospital in Washington, D.C.. Although they know he is safe and getting better each day, Mrs. March and her daughters would much rather have father at home.

Making the best of the situation, the women bravely carry on with a subdued celebration, but obviously their minds are elsewhere. Christmas Day will hold some wonderful surprises, though, and this will be perhaps the most memorable December 25th the family has ever had.

The art that accompanies this story is quite exceptional and makes this warm tale all the better. You'll love sharing this with family and friends year after year if this becomes part of your family's literary holiday tradition.
