Kurt Wallander has spent thirty years in the same job with the Swedish police forces. He is tired and looking to change his lifestyle. While checking out a house outside of Oslo as a possible new start, he finds a skeletal hand poking through the soil of the house's garden.

Which, of course, starts an investigation. The men given the job of digging up what could be a whole skeleton discover two! A man and a woman!

The history of the house has to be researched as well as the age of the bones of these two people. Who could they be? And who is responsible for them being buried in a back garden? Someone is. Kurt takes on the task of finding that person or those persons - his dream of this house in the country, with the possibility of a dog to keep him company, is no longer an option.

An Event in Autumn by Henning Mankell is shorter than the author's typical work. Nonetheless, it is just as good a book as his many previous bestsellers worldwide. And it's the twelfth of this intriguing series. The man certainly has been blessed with a writer's brush.

The last pages of the mystery are titled How It started, How It Finished and What Happened In Between. Here is where Mankell tells of his beginnings as a writer and his climb in the world of publishing. I think the man could rewrite a phone book and make it interesting.
