Alice Hyatt leaves New York behind her as she attempts to put her husband's infidelity behind her. Not only did he leave her for another woman, he also absconded with millions of dollars of clients' money! Alice had believed she had a pretty good marriage only to find that it was all a front. The man she loved was not who she thought he was.

She moves to her family's summer home in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts and opens her own business as the new landscape architect in town. It's a struggle to get established, but she soon has loyal customers who slowly became her friends as well.

Wealthy beyond imagining, Graham Mackenzie approaches her to design and install a garden that he wants to be a showpiece. Afraid it is too good to be true, Alice is shocked when Graham dies on the garden's opening day. She had hoped the garden would help establish her new business.

Author Liza Gyllenhaal often uses her writing skills to showcase her concern for the earth and what we are doing to it. She addresses fracking in Bleeding Heart, subtly weaving her platform on this matter into the plot. Not only does it enhance the storyline, but certainly woke me up to the damage that can be done to the earth by this retrieval method for natural resources.

The plot uncovers some of what Mackenzie did to make money and enrich his own holdings. Suspense reigns. The more Alice delves into the multimillionaire's life, the deeper she is pulled into the death of this man she once admired. The question of the actual cause of his death will keep you in suspense all the way to a great climax. Enjoy!
