In this picture book for children four and older, Petra Mathers addresses a difficult situation - the death of a dear one. Lottie's favorite aunt is in the hospital and not expected to live. As Lottie travels to be with Aunt Mattie at the end, the chicken remembers all the good times she shared with her aunt.

Arriving at the hospital, Lottie realizes that her aunt has waited for her to get there so she could say good-bye. 'They are expecting me upstairs, but I told them I was waiting for you. Oh Lottie, what fun we've had,' says Mattie and then she quietly passes away.

The rest of the picture book deals with the hurt Lottie feels at her loss. There's also the disposal of her aunt's cremated remains and Lottie deals with that as well.

Explaining the death of a close family member is a daunting task when a young child is concerned. This book may make it a little easier. Mathers doesn't write down to the child and she handles the situation with dignity.
