Josie Marcus is a mystery shopper. She checks out, at manufacturers' requests, the stores where their products are sold. The companies want to know that their products are being sold under ideal conditions. None of the sales people know who she is as her work is confidential.

She is commissioned to check out three dog day care facilities. No problem. She loves animals and has a big black Lab and two very loving cats. She begins her assignment with Uncle Bob's Doggie Day Camp. Everything looks to be as advertised – pampering to the highest degree; baths; shampoos; nail polish; specially made treats; pool time; etc. etc. etc.. Looks like Uncle Bob will get a high grade and be listed favorably in the Certified Pet Care Centers catalogs.

Ah, but now enters the story behind the scenes. It appears that Uncle Bob hates dogs and demonstrated that by kicking a tiny dog across a room, thereby breaking its leg. When Uncle Bob is murdered, in a most unusual way, Josie's mother's boyfriend is arrested. Since the men had a yelling match when the boyfriend quit his job with Uncle Bob, he is justifiably the first suspect.

In the meantime, as Josie has a rebellious fourteen year-old daughter to manage, the atmosphere in Josie's household tightens. A Dog Gone Murder is the tenth of this delightful series.
