With One of Us, she introduces readers to Forensic Psychologist Dr. Sheridan Doyle who works for the Philadelphia DA's office when a suspect's sanity needs to be assessed. Doyle is famed for the books he has written and the tabloids are always quoting him on high profile cases. But, as far as he is concerned, he is just plain Danny Doyle from the small mining village of Lost Creek. He is plagued by panic attacks, bullying and a family history that is best not brought to the public eye. He returns home to Lost Creek, a crumbling coal-mining town with a sad history of a rebel band of Irish coal miners hung all together. Doyle happens to find a dead body at the base of the gallows where these men were hung. The town has exploited the gallows as a lure to draw tourists in to spend much-needed money. Doyle is asked to profile the killer. He joins Rafe, a veteran detective who was a surrogate father to Doyle when he was growing up. Together they investigate and discover long-ago happenings that they would rather not dredge up. One of Us is gorgeously written, with glowing descriptive phrases. They make the reader stop for a moment to enjoy and imagine the scene depicted but do not detract from the fluidity of the action. In One of Us, we find not only a fine, suspenseful mystery but also excellent writing that is hard to beat. It is well worth a read.
