Cal Claxton practices law in Oregon's wine country. A former LA prosecutor, he lives to fish. When his close friend Philip Lone Deer (a fishing guide) asks him to stand in for a guide who injured his back, Cal is thrilled. Not only to spend more time with Philip but to fish to his heart's content. The trip is scheduled for only three days with a group of executives from a high-tech firm. Should be a walk in the park.

Then Cal finds the CEO of this company lying beside the Deschutes River where trout fishing is the best. Unfortunately this man will never hook a fish again. His throat has been cut ear to ear and Cal is the chief suspect. Cal's own, distinctive knife was the murder weapon and his jacket was found near the scene.

Cal had had a brief affair with the CEO's wife. Police believe that the motive was jealousy and are sure they have the right man. Cal realizes the police aren't going to look any further. He must solve the murder or spend the rest of his life in prison. As he investigates, Cal's Australian sheep dog Archie is his lifeline. He also worries about his daughter's well being - she is digging wells for the parched natives of Darfur.

It's an engaging book with a believable protagonist. I loved the plot. If you are a fisherman, you will definitely identify with Cal, who also shone in another of Warren C. Easley's mysteries, Matters of Doubt.
