The boy's parents met in Montreal, Canada, but Malcolm was born in 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska, and was one of seven children. The child's first nightmarish encounter with racial inequality occurred when the family home was burned down. Earl Little, the boy's father, then moved his family to Lansing, Michigan, where he built a new home. Growing up in a family that had a strong sense of social justice and wasn't afraid to voice their beliefs, Malcolm learned much from his parents that set him on the course he would one day follow as a civil rights activist. Certainly the fact that his father was killed when Malcolm was still quite young and he was later separated from his mother had a lasting effect on the youngster too. Beautiful illustrations and an informative text fill in the boyhood of Malcolm X and explain how this difficult time, especially after his father's death, set the tone and pointed him on a path for the events that followed in his adulthood.
