Coexisting among us are the Others. They are a race of mystical beings such as shapeshifters, vampires, and magicians. When an Other comes of age, he or she must form an allegiance with either the Darkness or the Light. Anton Gorodetsky is a mid-level Light magician and a member of the Night Watch. As such, Anton must help maintain the peace between the Light and the Dark.

On his first mission with the Night Watch, Anton comes across an Other like no other. The young woman is cursed, and has amazing powers, but has not yet decided if she will form an alliance with the Light or Dark side. Since the destiny of Anton and the woman are intertwined, a wrong move could prove disastrous, destroying Moscow and the rest of the world.

The novel, set in Moscow (and translated by Andrew Bromfield), has inspired films by director Tim Bekmambetov. It has also been adapted into a video game, popular among gamers.

I was not particularly interested in this novel. I have read many science fiction and fantasy stories that deal with the struggle between light and dark forces and am a bit tired of similar plot struggles. Regardless, I can understand why Night Watch is so enjoyed and is a bestseller.
