In a small town in Missouri, Devereaux 'Dev' Sinclair owns an old-fashioned five-and-dime store. To make ends meet, Dev opens her shop to local clubs for their meetings.

Unfortunately, when the Stepping Out Book Club invites a local poet as their speaker, he turns out to be extremely opinionated and has nothing nice to say about women or the town in which he now resides. In fact, he's almost booed out of the meeting. Later, though, he causes real trouble. His body is found near the dumpster in the back of Dev's store.

Devereaux doesn't want her store closed down just because of a murder. She can't afford to lose the revenue. Also, she happens to have two beaus. She can't decide between them – both are sexy hot and stir her more than she would like. Her dilemma is one many would like to have. But a decision must be made and she just can't be pressured into making it.

Meanwhile she has decided to assist the police in tracking down the murderer. Which, of course, puts her in harm's way and on the police black list.

Dead Between the Lines by Denise Swanson is the third in her Devereaux Dime Store mysteries. She also has an impressive seventeen Scumble River mysteries.

Swanson has come up with a good plot and a very credible protagonist. Believe me when I say I couldn't choose between her two men if I had too. And I wished I could have her problem. The mystery was plausible and I hated the murdered man. We will soon be sunning in beach weather and this is a great cozy to tuck in your beach bag.
