Where can a person go from being a young girl, to a kitten, back to a human, back to a kitten, and back to a girl again? Why, in Tanglewood Forest of course!

Young Lillian Kindred lives with her aunt on their farm near Tanglewood Forest. With her chores done, Lillian loves to explore the forest. But one day she finds herself in great danger ... while dozing under a tree she is bitten by a snake.

Afraid to let the girl die, the wild cats of the forest turn Lillian into a kitten. But the young girl is not feline so good about the change and seeks the help of Old Mother Possum. Along the way she finds that the animals of the forest can talk and she can understand them!

Befriending a crow and a fox, Lillian has many adventures on her journey to being human again. But is it really better for her to be a girl? And what of her beloved aunt, Lillian's only family?

This long chapter book is full of beautiful color illustrations by Charles Vess. Young readers, and older ones too, will enjoy this lovely folktale, full of problems and consequences, fairies, talking animals, and magic.
