When Diana marries Lord Stephan Furnaval, she has no idea that her husband is one of the few remaining keepers of supernatural portals scattered across the globe. William wastes no time initiating her into 'the family business'. Together they would stop demonic entities from crossing over from their dark netherworld. When William is killed, Diana is heartbroken, but firm in her dedication to continue his work.

When questions arise concerning her husband's death, Diana travels to Transylvania for answers. Along with her spunky cat familiar, Mina, mysterious scholar Stephan, and an assortment of colourful secondary characters, Diana begins a global journey to solve the dark mystery surrounding William's supposed death, as well as prevent humankind from falling victim to a demonic incursion.

Lisa Morton writes with panache, cornering the flavour, atmosphere and social mores of England, Europe and the United States in the latter part of the 1800's. Lady Diana definitely lives an unconventional and adventurous lifestyle, and more so once she inherits all that comes with her husband's title. Her dogged pursuit of the truth surrounding his demise and her quest to close every last portal make for a fun ride as she dukes it out, both mentally and physically, with various antagonists, otherworldly, or not.
