Clara Benning, a veterinary surgeon with horrendous facial scars from childhood, prefers to work for a charitable trust whose purpose is to care for injured wildlife and which allows her to avoid meeting new people. This story starts with a call from a neighborhood mom who has found an adder in her sleeping daughter's bed. Soon afterwards, the neighborhood begins to find venomous snakes that don't normally appear in the wild in their country.

I like that Bolton did so much research on snakes to make her book accurate. (At the end of the story, she admits that she found no proof that grass snakes swarm). She is very precise in her descriptions. The scary part of the story is knowing there were snakes from other areas of the world loose in the countryside and that they were much more deadly than the adder commonly found in Great Britain.

Bolton's novels are always full of suspense. She writes great thrillers. The plot here is complicated but it comes together at the end.
