I am a fan of Jonathan Kellerman's books and don't know how this one slipped by me. Fortunately I came upon a copy and thoroughly enjoyed Gone.

Two young, aspiring actors fake an abduction and their terrible ordeal in the remote mountains of Malibu at the hands of a monster. When their story proves implausible, they admit that it was a hoax to get them some publicity in aid of their goal of becoming movie stars.

The local police are not happy with the two but when the girl turns up dead, they realize there is more to this than it seemed. The young man is not to be found and it is believed he has fled to escape prosecution for the unwarranted waste of police time.

But psychologist Alex Delaware sees more sinister aspects to the girl's murder. Delaware teams up with his good friend, homicide cop Milo Sturgis, once again to follow clues, hoping they will ultimately lead to a murderer. Author Kellerman has created engaging and sometimes loony characters.

All of the happenings lead up to a breathtaking ending, at which Kellerman is so adept. This is an older book but just as bright as if it were published yesterday.
