In the spring of 1277, Prioress Eleanor decides to go on a pilgrimage to a shrine in East Anglia. She and Brother Thomas head out, unknowing that murder lies ahead. It had been rumored that King Edward was also to visit the shrine at around the same time. It was also rumored that someone wishes to kill the king. So another of the Prioress Eleanor series begins the tenth one.

A nun falls from the priory bell tower to her death. Brother Thomas finds the body and quickly concludes this was no accident. Suddenly treason pops up and Eleanor and Thomas are once again embroiled in a murder investigation and, for the first time, an investigation of treason. Many people are enraged at King Edward's plan to invade Wales.

There are many possible candidates to fill the role of either murderer or traitor or possibly the same person, or persons, for both roles.

This is really a fun series, if one can call murder fun. I do, as long as it is only in the books I read. The twist I like is the history that is such a big part of the story. It's delightful to read of another time and the people who lived then what they ate, what they wore, how they lived, what they believed. The reader quickly becomes a part of the scenes and gets a brief history course along with the delight of solving a ghastly murder or two.

Priscilla Royal delivers all this with a panache that really works.
