They help clients who are victims of crimes to regain control over their lives. To subsidize their work, twenty crime writers have donated their time and talents to write Inherit the Dead, hoping, from its sales, to assist Safe Horizon continue their unfortunately much needed work. Laurence Block, Mary Higgins Clark, John Connolly, Stephen L. Carter, Charlaine Harris are just a few of the crime writers involved in writing Inherit the Dead. Each of these twenty acclaimed authors has written a chapter, taking up the story where the last one left off. I thought when I picked up this novel that the transition from one to the next would stand out. After all, they all have our own style of writing. Not a hiccup from one chapter to the next. It's a delightful book, if you don't have an aversion to a dead body or two. Ah, yes. The story. Pericles 'Perry' Christos had been an NYPD homicide cop. But when a corruption scandal broke, he was the one to take the heat, even though he was innocent of the charges. The ones responsible were able to pass the wrongdoing on to him. He lost his wife, child and home in the process. An Eastside matron, Julia Drusilla, contacts him. She wants him to locate her daughter, Angelina. A fortune is involved and the daughter has to sign papers for a very large money transfer to take place. He talks to Julia as well as Angel's father, her best friend and her boyfriend. They all have their own agendas. He is determined to find this girl. One, he needs the fee. Two, he thinks there is more to this story than meets the eye. And there is – more than meets the eye. Inherit the Dead is a good story. A good read. But what else can you expect when these tried and true authors combine their skills?
