Here's an apt gift for those in your life circle who are trying to manage a greener life - The Imperfect Environmentalist by actress/producer/mother and self-styled imperfect environmentalist Sara Gilbert. The Dr. Seuss quote at the beginning of the book says it all: 'Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.'

In her Introduction, Gilbert tells us that environmental tomes can be daunting and that a Cliff Notes version was needed. Enter this book, which she recommends we use as a resource for quick summaries on specific topics. Chapters range from Air Quality, Animal Rights and Aquatic Life to Renewable Energy/Energy Saving, Social Justice/Human Rights and Water Quality. Big topics! But Gilbert takes each on with a light touch leavened with humor.

For each topic, she begins with a Cut to the Chase, Hippie: What's the Least I Need to Know?, moves on to 'Intriguing ... I Can Handle a Little More', and often ends with 'I Need Some Facts to Bore My Friends With'. There's even a section on Happy Green Holidays (which tells us that lasers are a healthier option than fireworks).

Though the number of changes one would have to make in life to be a perfect environmentalist is indeed as daunting as some of the tomes on the subject, this engaging volume is an accessible and entertaining place to begin.
