All the signs are there. Summer the murder season will come early this year. The heat, the uneasiness in the air, her inability to find a cool spot on her pillow or sheets - Detective Lena Gamble thinks this is going to be a long, hard summer.

At the same moment, she gets a call to a double homicide. Number one victim is the owner of a dubious nightclub that is open twenty-four-seven. Number two is a twenty-four year-old man who had just been acquitted of killing his sixteen year-old neighbor. They were found in the office of the club a carded club.

As Gamble takes charge of the case, she realizes she could lose her job over this. Politics raises its shaggy head. As she delves further and further into the shootings, she suspects that the dead girl's father might have killed his own daughter. Maybe the acquitted youth is not guilty after all. She discovers that the young man and the club owner were trying to prove the young man was innocent.

There are many side trails in this engrossing tale. Each one leads to another trail that must be followed to the end where another awaits. Gamble must smooth-talk the city's dignitaries because they all have their own personal agendas such as upcoming elections. Murder Season by Robert Ellis is a very good read. Take my word for it.
