Puckster's First Hockey Tournament, by Lorna Schultz Nicholson and illustrated by Kelly Findley, is third in the Puckster series, aimed at young hockey players and fans (ages 4 to 8).

Before the game, Roly (a bear) eats one loaded hot dog. They win their first game, after which Roly ingests 'two plates of french fries with gravy.' Can you see where this is going yet? Puckster's team wins their second game, and are set for the gold medal game the next day. That morning, Roly celebrates with pizza rather than Puckster's healthy offerings. Of course, disaster strikes! By break time, their goalie is out of action. What can they do? You'll have to read the book to find out, but there is more than one sports lesson to be learned (summarized in Puckster's Tips at the back) from Puckster's First Hockey Tournament.

There's a fair amount of text in a picture book for the targeted age group, and in a smaller print than usual, but this will probably not deter young players and their parents from enjoying this inexpensive, action-packed volume together.
