At ten years old, Ryan Brooks was travelling in the back of his parent's station wagon, happily unaware that his life was about to change forever. A head on collision claimed the lives of both his parents that day and Ryan's only recollection is of the hands that saved him from the fiery crash. Throughout his life, he received cards and acknowledgement from his saviour, Mike O'Donnell, on that fateful day. Now, thirty years later, the tables have turned. O'Donnell is dying of cancer and wishes to see him.

Knowing that returning to Wyoming is going to be tough, and also awkward, Ryan makes the trip. Mike's death bed confession makes him want to know the truth about what happened on the day his parents died. But Ryan never expected to fall in love with Mike's married daughter Shannon, or to even begin to comprehend the story that is about to unfold about Mike's Italian wife Alessandra. All the answers that Ryan seeks are deeply interwoven in the story of generations past. And if Ryan were only to look within his own heart he might have found the answers he's been looking for.

What a thought provoking book that leads you through both present and past. I especially liked the World War II love story, which made me feel as if I were there witnessing all the devastation and the ugliness first hand. Jonathan Hull is a master story teller who will have you captivated from the very beginning right until the end of The Devoted.
