Betsy Callison has finally married and is escaping her mother. She has a brand new house in an upscale neighbourhood but cannot believe that her new neighbours are hippies.

She is stunned, since Betsy herself is prim and most definitely proper, a very down to earth Republican. But Betsy does the right thing. She meets her neighbours and ends up best friends with Kat Ellis, a wild, live by the seat of your pants liberal type. As the years fly by, Betsy's husband ends up having an affair with his secretary. He leaves and Betsy has to move on.

Two years go by. Betsy finds out that her best friend Kat is going to marry her ex-husband. With them living right across the street, life might prove to be a bit tough. Betsy has long got over her husband but their flaunting their love for each other is a bit difficult to take. Now something is brewing and Betsy is not sure if she wants to get involved giving advice to her friend about her ex.

What a delightfully strange story about two women becoming best friends and ending up in a very strange situation. The novel portrays the challenges that women can overcome and the strength they can find when needed. It has humour and insight and makes you want to cheer Betsy and Kat for their friendship. I loved the book and will want to read more from Haywood Smith.
