When a young reader opens this book the youngster will discover a fascinating world of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Each major section of the volume opens with a two page world map showing where the animals introduced in the section reside.

The individual, two page spreads are introduced by cartoon characters from the Disney menagerie of animated characters. For example, Mickey Mouse introduces the section on bats. Along with color photos of the winged creatures, the section is constructed around three questions: 'Why do bats hang upside down? When are bats active? Do blood-sucking bats really exist?'

This question and answer approach is used throughout the book and is a subtle way of getting important information about each animal to the reader. Parents and teachers can piggy-back on this approach by having the child or class make up their own questions about each set of animals, which can then lead to a research project.

Granted, there isn't a lot of depth here about any single animal, but if used as a broad introduction to the world of animals this book works well. The photos and graphics are excellent, thus hopefully piquing the youngster's interest and curiosity and making him/her wish to learn more about these amazing creatures.
