When you open the first page of The Clause by Brian Wiprud, you realize you are on a wild ride. Hang on to your hat. It's a doozy.

Gill Underwood has to dispose of a body. The manner in which this is done is a trifle unsettling. Especially as the corpse was not only his partner in jewel theft but also his partner in love.

The current heist has gone wrong and Trudy – the partner – was shot. Gill knows that the people of The Clause were behind his love's death and also set him up to be caught. The Clause is a secretive group that operates under its own auspices. To join is to be a member for life, and what you know about the group is minimal - just that you have pledged allegiance to it and its members.

Gill eludes authorities but just by the skin of his teeth. He holds about $100,000 worth of hot sparks – uncut diamonds – and is now running from ruthless groups of gangs of Serbians, Chinese, Israelis and Cubans. Did I leave anyone out?

He manages to reach his underworld contacts, allowing him to retire and disappear. He accumulates what he needs to blow up almost anything. Including some unusual containers. And uses it. Gum, anyone?

Author Brian Wiprud has come up with a devious plot that is not to be missed. And although Gill is on the other side of the law, you can't help rooting for him.
