Life is good right now and she really doesn't want any upsets. Her father is coming for a visit, and she is excited and a bit scared because he has never done this before. Her father arrives bearing a package with very familiar handwriting on the front. Beth knows where it comes from and is very reluctant to open it. But open it she does and inside is a scrapbook, a record of all the summers she spent in Hungary when she was growing up - a place and time when betrayal pierced her heart, and she made a vow she might want to reconsider. The first picture takes Beth back to when she was nine years old during a summer with her parents in Hungary, a vacation that ended up with her parents being separated. Beth's mother Marika, decided to stay in Hungary, while daughter and father returned to England. Though Beth's family was destroyed in her mind, she returned to visit Marika for the next seven summers. In these summers, Beth began to bloom, learning how to appreciate life and all of its beauty. She also became very close to her mother until one fateful day when Beth uncovered a secret that shattered her life. She was never to return again to see Marika or the beautiful Hungarian countryside. The Book of Summers is a very well written book, full of so much scenic description that you can actually smell the flowers. It will remind you of a beautiful summer day, as the warm wind rushes across your face. It's a lovely tale of a girl growing up in a different country, and learning what love is about.
