The Fletchers jump at the chance to build their dream house on a vacant lot in Hoptonclough, a small isolated village on the moors. The new house is built between the village's two churches.

The Fletcher boys, Tom and Joe, are excited in the beginning. They have large new bedrooms and story book surroundings for outdoor play, but the village isn't welcoming. Tom, the older son is often harassed by classmates. As the pranks continue, Tom begins to believe someone is watching his family.

Harry Laycock arrives to be the new vicar at St. Barnabas Church. As he settles in, he often hears voices when he is alone in the church. He can't find their source. At his first church service, someone switches the communion wine for pigs' blood. Someone would like the church to stay closed. They want Harry to leave.

When Harry discovers that three little girls have been murdered over the last ten years, he begins to think the church might be part of the mystery. Two-year-old Millie Fletcher may be the next victim, but only young Tom believes she is in danger.

Great character development and the atmosphere of a village surrounded by moors add to an already suspenseful book. The plot was tangled enough to keep me guessing until the end. I hope to read more by this talented British author.
