This unusual book on writing is well worth reading. It's meant to be read day-by-day for a year as you write your book. Every day offers a new essay filled with encouragement, inspiration and advice.

Sometimes Evans reminds you where you should be in your novel writing, although she never mentions page numbers other than 'by the time you get to page 50, you should ...' She refers to writing the book as a marathon. She's a long distance runner (writer), but she knows there are sprinters, too.

In her book that's written to be your companion as you write, Evans helps you maintain focus and motivation. She includes topics on plotting, characters and your story's timeline – to name just a few examples – in a succinct narrative voice. She tells you what works for her and other writers she knows.

She acts as cheerleader, coach and writing consultant. Some of her essays repeat advice, but if you really are reading the book day-by-day, repeating advice should work well as a reminder.

Evans writes mysteries and her advice often comes from things she's learned while writing her Faye Longchamp series. It's always a pleasure to find a new series. I'm already on book one, Artifacts.
