D.C. Lacey Flint is called into a case involving an odd increase in suicides at Cambridge. She'll be undercover reporting to old flame Mark Joesbury and working with Evi Oliver, a psychiatrist and head of student counseling. Evi is the person who brought the suicides to the attention of the police. Evi thinks that there might be a website encouraging the students to take their own lives.

Lacey soon realizes there is something much worse going on. Her assignment is to fit in and report what she hears. Not to investigate. On her first night there, Lacey is targeted by a gang of bullying male students in masks. That is just the beginning. Soon she realizes someone is trying to break her. Lacey doesn't think that's possible. It's hard for her to understand how anyone could allow their free will to be taken away and be pushed into suicide.

Dead Scared is told by Lacey in first person, but scenes without her are told in third person. The title really describes this mystery/thriller. It is a scary, suspenseful read. S.J. Bolton ranks right up there with today's top mystery writers.

Evi has an earlier book, Sacrifice, which I began reading as soon as I finished this one. I'm also looking forward to reading Now You See Me, a previous Lacey Flint novel.
