Arranged thematically into ten core subjects (planet earth, space and stars, the living world, animal life, body science, the story of the past, people and society, arts and entertainment, science and technology and communication), this is an excellent general reference book for young readers.

Granted, since each entry - such as games or air transportation is only two pages in length, there isn't a lot of information to digest. For example, the latter topic features short paragraphs on helicopters, flying boats, hot air balloons, airlines and airports, and the basic controls of an airplane. Coupled with the colorful illustrations, photos and diagrams, this material will hopefully pique the child's interest to look for more detailed books on the subject matter.

As a starting point, this inexpensive volume is an ideal way to expose a youngster to many different areas of interest from history and biology to government and technology. Read through the book with your child and take note of the areas which seem to be of the most interest. Then a trip to the library or bookstore will enable you to show your son or daughter other, more detailed books, that will allow for further exploration of the subject.
