The Troubled Man by Henning Mankell (translated by Laurie Thompson) brings Kurt Wallender back into our lives. And not a moment too soon.

Kurt's (I use the familiar first name – he's an old friend by now) daughter Linda has just had a baby. Her partner's father, a retired Swedish naval officer, has disappeared. Kurt is not the police detective assigned to the case, but this is the father of the man his daughter loves.

So, in Kurt's style, he starts his own investigation which involves interrogations with anyone who would have any doings at all with the missing man. He discovers things about the man that baffle him. When the officer's wife goes missing, he's about to give up. But there is his daughter to consider.

I can't give you much more of the plot. Don't want to ruin the surprises that are part and parcel of a very good scenario.

Kurt is becoming frightened by blackouts that occur every so often. He's not sure just what is wrong but has suspicions. He dreads getting older and fears turning into the bitter old man his father had become. His daughter Linda keeps a close eye on him, despite a rocky relationship. But the love of father and daughter shines through.

There is a total shock in the epilogue. Thank you, Mr. Mankell, for many hours of extremely enjoyable reading.
