Done entirely in muted dark tones (lots of grey, brown and black) that represent the night, this simple book is not only quite attractive and different but it also offers a simple yet poignant message for a young child someone is always watching over you and cares deeply for you.

The main part of this picture book shows various animals, such as sheep, cows, goats, dogs and other animals, out in the open. Each pair consists of an adult and young creature. On this starry night wherever they are and whatever they do, the little ones have their mother or father keeping watch over them.

Then, towards the end of the book the scene changes. 'On this starry night Mary and Joseph watched over their newborn babe ... beloved one ... and the world was filled with love ... God's will be done ... Amen'

The minimal text and striking illustrations convey the idea that a parent's love is a very strong bond and one that all creatures share in common. No matter your child's age, he or she can't hear that enough!
