Continuing with her medieval mystery series, Priscilla Royal has brought Prioress Eleanor of Tyndal Priory to Doux et Dur Castle, home of Baron Herbert and his family.

When the baron left the castle to join the Crusades, he said goodbye to his wife and five sons. On his return he finds that two of them have predeceased him, a fever claiming one and the other an apparent suicide. What is almost as troubling is the fact that Herbert will not allow his wife or three remaining sons to approach him.

His wife needs his shoulder to cry on as well as reassurance of his love, and his retainers are not certain where they stand with him. Everyone is under tension and sparks soon fly. Herbert asks Sir Hugh of Wynethrope to succor him. Sir Hugh is Prioress Eleanor's brother and together they hie to Doux et Dur.

Prioress Eleanor can't help but wonder if something sinister is going on and pokes her nose into the family's tragedies. Action heats up as unknown facts emerge. It seems as though everyone is watching their backs.

A Killing Season is a good read, what with the mystery that evolves and the taste of life in the 13th century. This is the eighth book in the series and I am hoping there will be a ninth.
