Three New Zealand teenagers discover that they all have something in common. They each lost an older brother to suicide. After doing some research they discover other related suicides and Summerton, a tourist paradise, and New Year's Eve is what ties all of the young men together.

Keri is athletic and confident. The confidence comes from being prepared for everything, but she wasn't prepared for her brother's suicide. Janna is a musician, a good one. Confident and outgoing, she's nicknamed Stardust. Sione is a visitor to Summerville. He's shy and self-conscious, but smart. He's the one who first figured out that there was more to the suicides than there seemed to be.

With another New Year coming up and another victim imminent, their search for a serial killer needs to be done quickly. A twist in their investigation introduces magic to the equation and their prime suspect becomes someone they know and trust. If they are right, how many other citizens of Summerton know what's happening?

The New Zealand setting was enough to make me want to read The Shattering. It was a good choice, with many interesting characters and plot twists.
