Author Laura Lippman likes to use Baltimore and its environs as the settings in her books. Her newest – The Most Dangerous Thing – is no exception. Neither is the quality of her writing.

Lippman has the ability to delve into the deepest depths of her characters' minds and hearts to put on paper their hates, loves, and those things they most desire to keep secret. And she reveals why - as well as the repercussions that evolve.

As children, the three Halloran brothers - Tim, Sean and Go-Go - teamed up with Mickey and Gwen to forage in the woods bordering Gwen's father's dream house. In those days, they were the best of friends.

Something happened to break up that group friendship, something bad enough to make them almost strangers to each other. Now, as adults, they avoid each other and live separate lives. As readers, we are treated to their thoughts and actions with the secret they all kept never far from their minds.

The plot of The Most Dangerous Thing is captivating. Readers are able to feel smug that they know the reasons behind each of the characters' actions. But, do we really?
