Barnum owns the spectacular American Museum in which the most amazing oddities are to be found. Employed in this museum is a man by the name of Bartholomew Fortuno, the thinnest man on earth. Bartholomew believes his body is a gift to the world and is proud to show it on stage in his performance. He works with many other odd folk and freaks. Though his best friend Matina (the fat lady) is a great companion, he is finding himself less and less content with his life. One day a carriage pulls up to the museum and out steps a very petite veiled woman. The rumor spreads that she is the newest attraction. Bartholomew becomes very curious as to who this woman is. Barnum decides he wants Bartholomew to keep an eye on her, and to report to him what she does and where she goes. As time goes by, Bartholomew finds himself falling in love with this veiled lady. The Transformation of Bartholomew Fortuno is a very interesting tale about hunger for change, and how strongly humans need to be connected and normal. I enjoyed this book very much, with its window into the time period and into what it must be like to be so very different.
